my mnemonics for 5 ma: 妈[mā]: my "mother" always comes first 马[mǎ]: I think of the U shape of the back of a "horse" 码[mǎ]: I look at the u shape of the first three letters of "number" 骂 [mà]: when I "scold" or "blame" somebody, I look down on him 吗 [ma]: "?" when I don't know, I don't put any tone

changye, auntie68, AuntieSue, of course 吗 as a question marker is fifth tone. I understand now why you still need to follow Newbie lessons.

not mentioned here, the most famous character with a neutral tone is 吗 ChinesePeraKun reminds me : unless 吗 is used to say morphine.

somebody told me a year ago a sentence which has 滩 and 烫 and it sounds like "tang tan tang tang tan tang tan" Anybody knows it ?
