冰淇淋给孩子吃掉了。 perhaps for your english translation 冰淇淋给孩子们吃光了 may be more accurate.
the use of 了 is correct. using 了 here says that there was previously ice-cream left in the tub.

边 and 面 are not entirely interchangeable. I'm not a linguist but i'll try to explain with a few vocab examples.
面 refers to one's face, or the face or surface of an object, as well as space. 面子，没面子。 对面，前面、后面。 河面、海面、上面、下面. 里面、外面。
边 on the other hand refers only to directional space. 旁边。左边、右边、海边、河边。这边、那边。东边、西边、南边、北边。边 can't be used for surface or face.

I guess the modern generation is too busy with other causes。The girls look eager to please in their jackheels. Although i'd say versace would have something to say about the color coordination
