i just wanted to commend the guy who plays 马经理... i always enjoy the lessons he acts in. you can really feel how he conveys 顾雨's audacity when he says 阿? 你要加百分之五十?

Posted on: How Far Away are You From Understanding 离?

speaking of 离... i learned this quote last week and tried it on one of my friends:

"八九不离十".

"8 and 9 are not far from 10".

you can use this when you want to comunicate to a person that their guess or estimation was close.

i think we have a comparatively similar statement in english that goes a little something like:

"close, but no cigar". (not as popular as it was before, but definitely 八九不离十's english brother)

i'm not sure how universal this quote is... i live in beijing and people here know it pretty well, and so do my taiwanese friends.

thank you.

just the other day i ate at a muslim restaurant, in beijing, and was so hungry that i swallowed 5 pieces of chicken with bones in them.... after my friend told me there were bones in the food, the first thing i thought of is "who the hell am i going to sue now?". it took me a few minutes to realize that it was me who was the dumbass, not the cook... how's that for cultural lesson?

i think it's awesome how i get credit for using chopsticks in beijing, when i used them in america since i was a little boy. yes, contrary to popular belief, chopsticks are super-common in america (especially in metro areas). hmmmm, maybe i should keep that a secret, so i can keep cashing in all all the praise????

i asked a couple of my Taiwanese friends what is different about China and Taiwan, and one of the funniest things they said was that Chinese always "cut".
