I suspect you're right. I've always heard 软件 on the mainland, but I've seen 软体 written in articles (not sure if they were from Taiwan or not, though)...

About your character display problem, can you check what character encoding Safari is using? Click "View" then "Text Encoding" and see what is checked. It should be either "Default" or "UTF-8." If it's neither of those (or if it's Default and it's still not working) trying changing the encoding to "UTF-8" and see if that clears things up.
Firefox is rather smarter about guessing the right character encoding and encounters these problems much less frequently than Safari.

On that flight they do all of the announcements in both English and Chinese, so it's not really true that only on domestic flights would you hear this sort of thing (in Chinese). Also, 4:20pm Beijing time is 3:20am (in Chicago), so that time is correct, though I don't remember whether or not they included that in the announcements when I've flown.

May 31, 2008 at 1:57 AM@marcdevincentis, you can say both, but they convey different feelings. 要 is stronger than 想 -- I will study Chinese vs. I'd like to study Chinese, or something like that. 要 can indicate that something is to be done in the future: 你今天要做什么？我要学习中文。

I've noticed more and more 繁体字 on signs in Shanghai (to make the business look classy, I guess), and there are tons of unofficial simplifications to be found (like 亻+丁 for 停) written on walls and doors. I even saw 広, which is the Japanese simplification of 广/廣 once in a sign. It's like character soup! Fun stuff.

To be fair, there's all sorts of indicators telling people what they should be doing in the Shanghai subway system. The failure is in those people actually doing what the indicators say.
