June 28, 2011 at 10:26 AM乐观 is used more than 乐天 at least on the mainland. 乐观的人 describes a person who has a positive outlook and personality if you will. 乐天 pretty much means the same thing but it's not used too much on the mainland. 快活 is not really used to describe personalities. It's used to describe a state of mind.

June 28, 2011 at 6:32 AMThis is an alternative universe to the "unlucky" lesson. Study the 2 lessons back to back for extra comical effect and parallel language to describe respective emotions.

June 28, 2011 at 3:49 AMSkritter is available to Premium, Guided and Executive users. It supports both simplified and traditional characters. You can switch by clicking the little cogwheel on the right of the discussion page in each lesson. When you switch, the lesson content switches to simplified or traditional. Skritter changes with that.

June 27, 2011 at 8:39 AMThere are no PDFs to cultural shows like BST because they are not academic shows. They are designed to showcase life and culture in China. All of the academic lessons (newbie, elementary, intermediate, upper intermediate and advanced lessons) come with PDFs.

June 29, 2011 at 5:22 AM离休 means "retired" but only applies to those who joined the revolutionary efforts (参加革命) before 1949. Both of my grandmas are 离休 military people. In Shanghai, the retirement benefits for 离休 people are about 10K/month with full medical coverage. But there are only a small number of people who qualify for the status and they are at least 80 years old now.
