August 26, 2011 at 2:58 AMThe amount of Chinese we use in our banter depends on which academic level the lesson belongs to. At newbie and ele, we limit the amount of Chinese used outside the lesson to keep the content comprehensible and digestable. But we also include level appropriate words such as the ones John said whereas glitzy shops and CBD are not elementary words (shops are, 商店/shāngdiàn). In intermediate you will notice I use almost all Chinese to explain things with John providing the translation.

August 25, 2011 at 9:06 AMYes, it's better to use 灵活 to mean flexible in the sense of easily adaptable. 弹性is mostly used to mean physical texture with th exception of describing policies or systems. In these instances, 灵活 and 弹性 are interchangeable. 弹性工作时间和灵活工作时间都可以。

August 25, 2011 at 7:26 AM别担心 (bié dānxīn) means "don't worry" or "don't be overly concerned". 别急 (bié jí) while also means "don't worry", it also means to have a sense of urgency or be pressed to have a solution in a short time.

August 25, 2011 at 3:54 AM上/shàng has several meanings, but most is based on the root meaning "up" or "top". When it is used in a time word such as 上午, it refers to the "upper" part (first half) of the day, i. e. morning. When it's used in a verb such as 上班/to go to work or 上学/go to school, it means to start something. In general, when 上 often refers to the start of something, whether it's time or an action. I am not clear on the etymology of 早上 and 晚上, but it might mean that the morning or the night has arrived.
