August 29, 2011 at 2:28 AMAs I have told users from time to time, using "xiaojie" is perfectly acceptable in Shanghai whereas in other parts of China such as Beijing and more Northern up, it's not. Apparently, from your experience it doesn't work in Guilian either.

Tone marks are a part of the font. You can't change the tone marks without changing the entire font. We use Arial, which shows the tone marks rather clearly. (Unicode) Arial also has pretty universal support, unlike pretty much any other alternative font choice. But I do apologize for the inconvenience it has caused you. But user tony_jarvis has offered some really helpful advice to enlarge the page within your browser or on Acrobat Reader. Hope you will find it useful.

August 27, 2011 at 11:13 PMWe debated a fair bit about 功底很深. I think in Chinese, it means both to have a solid foundation and further developed it to a high level of skill, thus 深, i.e. the depth of your core foundation and skills as opposed to just having a solid foundation but no advanced skills.

August 27, 2011 at 4:11 AM1. 了 can't be universally applied to all verbs to indicate past tense, e.g. verbs which indicate a prolonged action such as 住 shouldn't be coupled with 了 。On the contrary, they don't require 了. The tense is implied by the context and time words such as 以前.
2. Verb+了+多久了 indicates a present continuous tense, somethings which started earlier and continues to the present. Remember 多久了 as a set phrase . 你在北京住了多久了?" is correct 你住在北京了多久了 is not. 了 should come after the verb in this type of structures.
3. You can use 你也是 in this kind of situations.
