October 12, 2007 at 2:34 AMjosht77, Yes, it is standard for the birthday person to pay in China. Only after being exposed to Western culture did we realise what a raw deal we've been getting. But then, the Chinese rationale is what comes around goes around. All the meals one pays for will eventually even out in this lifetime.

October 23, 2007 at 9:14 PMQuite soon, the overly complicated family terms will become fond memories. It struck me over the National Day holiday family reunions. The intimate bond I have with my aunts and uncles was a shocking antithesis to the very weak bonds between my nieces, nephews and myself. The only child generation will produce a generation with no immediate uncles and aunts. Scary.
