Quite soon, the overly complicated family terms will become fond memories. It struck me over the National Day holiday family reunions. The intimate bond I have with my aunts and uncles was a shocking antithesis to the very weak bonds between my nieces, nephews and myself. The only child generation will produce a generation with no immediate uncles and aunts. Scary.

The primary purpose of this series is to cover language that expresses emotion. What could be better than a diary format? After peeking at the lives of these 3 entirely different individuals, we've got to have a Superbowl showdown of love.

Glad you guys like it. There is an advanced lesson coming soon featuring a poem by Li Bai. My parents made me recite Tang poems when I could barely speak. I wish I can digitally master those tape recordings of me reciting poems at 3 years old.

josht77, Yes, it is standard for the birthday person to pay in China. Only after being exposed to Western culture did we realise what a raw deal we've been getting. But then, the Chinese rationale is what comes around goes around. All the meals one pays for will eventually even out in this lifetime.

It seems like life here revolves around political considerations of who to eat with and where at.
