February 13, 2008 at 6:39 PMsushan, UBC, LOL. I know some of the one billion Chinese there. Now, you can 留学 without 留学。Chinesepod greatly examplifies that. Poddies can learn a different langauge and culture without stepping out of your home. Having been a 留学生 myself, I feel extremely lucky to have had such an enriching experience. Even more beneficial than the academic side is the world view it has given me, that we essentially share very similar yet unique aspirations and hopes. This community is the best embodiment of that.

February 11, 2008 at 5:01 PMThe neutral tone is an outstanding difference between Mainland and Taiwanese accents. In my observation, the neutral tone is quite rarely used in Taiwan. For example, the duplicated word is pronounced almost as the same tone. 看看 sounds like 2 fourth tones, kan4 kan4.

February 11, 2008 at 4:35 PMchanna, Regarding hongbao, my observation is that 1)parents don't trust kids under a certain age with money. It is common for them to save on their behalf, as in my case. They'd give the kid some as pocket money or buy a wishlist item. But the bulk goes to the savings account. 20 years of hongbao amount to quite a small wealth. 2) We have a culture of saving money for rainy days. This might have changed with time. But in my family, my cousins are still custodians of their kids' hongbao.
