February 15, 2008 at 5:43 AMobitoddkenobi,

February 14, 2008 at 6:03 PMauntie68, WWI and WWII are 第一次世界大战 and 第二次世界大战。Very matter-of-factly, no alternative terms as in the Anglo-Saxon discourse, for the very reasons you so well put.

February 14, 2008 at 8:23 AMchangye, I thrived on Pocky for a better part of my life. Eating it for breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack. It is certainly worthy of celebration. I thought about being a dedicated Pocky collector, sampling all locally produced and imported ones from Japan. But ironically, I got overdosed in the process. I've stayed Pocky free for over a year now.

February 14, 2008 at 5:36 AMBoran, Singleton is 光棍儿/guang1 gun4 er, which literally means a stick. I guess the connotation is that you are all by yourself, partner less just like a stick which doesn't have a belonging compared to say a fork and a knife or bangers and mash. In recent years, November 11th has been hailed as 光棍儿节, for both visual and numercial reasons.

February 14, 2008 at 2:52 AMdogeatsrat, Plato is translated as 柏拉图.Platonic love is 柏拉图式恋爱, based on the transliteration. A more idiomatic term is 精神恋爱,indicating that the relationship is psychological not physical. I do sound a bit cynical in the podcast. Perhaps Valentine's Day brings out the cynicism in me. 不过还是祝大家情人节快乐!
