I like the term 国画/guo2 hua4. So confident! Even framing these paintings, 裱画/biao3 hua4 is a revered art in its own right.

stevehammond76, The tone change rules that Light487 and g4pilot summed up are very high frequency language. I think the key is to remember these, for example, bu4 into bu2 preceding a forth tone. We've done a c couple of lessons on tines and tone changes. Search the keyword 'tones'. A list of lessons will show up. http://chinesepod.com/search/key/tone

这节课一个重要的目地就是把“华侨”、“华人”和“华裔”的概念分清楚。我也是好一会儿才弄明白，真的要多听几遍。Marygrace, you are a 'huayi' or 'huaren'. They both mean Chinese who were born overseas. 'Huaqiao' refers to Chinese born in China, but migrated overseas. 其实跨国、跨文化是Cpod的大主题，我们会多做这方面的课程，多多探索，也请大家多多指教。

The very first time that I had vegemite, I was warned of its unique taste. But I was still shocked, because it faintly had the appearance of chocolate spread. But in reality it couldn't be any more different. I once also lived near a Kraft plant where they made Vegemite. The air perpetually smelled likle Vegemite.

Seems to be a great mystery building up around the order of the speech. Andrewm, Yes, I speak Shanghainese, but l use more Mandarin. Both of my parents grew up not speaking Shanghainese since their parents were migrants to the city. So our 'operating' language has always been Mandarin.

We didn't translate the sentences in the podcast (to add an air of mystery). 你打算什么时候生小孩？When do you plan to have kids? 来了多少人？How many people came? 我和哥哥都喜欢画画。My older brother and I both like to paint.

This lesson has part 2. Coming soon! There is a plethora of accents in China. We need an eternity to cover them. In fact, there are many regional accents or completely different dialogues within a region. Even within the same province, people might be utterly lost when communicating with someone from a different locality. vduncan, Aric is from Taiwan. His accent (or what we might generalise as Taiwan accent) is also the typical Fujian accent. But he is only mildly accented. In fact, all of the people in this lesson has a mild accent.
