alexye,

豁达 and 乐观 do have some common qualities, but they are not entirely the same. 乐观 means optimistic. 豁达 means you don't get angered or dragged down by adversity or negative emotions. You deal with those with a big open heart if that makes sense. I guess in order to be 豁达,one has to be optimistic in the first place.

开导 has a very specific context regarding usage.  It means to encourage and provide some sort of psychological counselling when someone is depressed, sad or unhappy. 鼓励 means to encourage. It has a much broader usage. For example, when someone has done well, you can still 鼓励 them to do even better.

审视 is generally used with things that are worthy of critical analysis. For example, problems, issues, political system and so on.

@bababardwan,

Yes, they do use 老公/lao3 gong1/husband and 老婆/ lao3 po2/wife to address each other. I guess it adds intimacy between them. It is interesting that marriage has a rather romantic and poetic connotaion in China.

我自己也觉得看电子书实在太费眼睛和颈椎了。不过国内很多年轻人喜欢把书下载到Sony PSP上,上下班时候看。

bendidelaowai,

kimiik,

Yes, you can definitely use 大手大脚 in the literal sense to describe Michael Phelps.

钻洞 or 钻一个洞 do not have any metaphoric meaning.

@waitingroom,

Very valid points. I think daily life language could be especially challenging when people are not only speaking fast but with accent or there are things particular to China which your study hasn't prepared you for. Something for us to start paying attention to and write lessons about. Thank you!
