October 5, 2009 at 12:16 AMDespite my mixed feelings, I have to say the parade was very impressive. The Chinese certainly have mastered the art of showmanship. I heard that all of the female marchers used to be models. Also, the president's car was hand-assembled and cost some 8 million RMB. The mind boggles.
Also, a belated apology to Matt. Message received regarding comments.

October 1, 2009 at 6:27 AMI'm not talking about the parade. I'm talking about the government. I read human rights reports and think to myself "Wow, how oppressive."
Freedom of speech in the comments section is fine but it becomes less enjoyable for some when it starts to take a political turn which I know is hard to avoid when it comes to these lessons.
Fair enough, and I generally agree. Some lessons like this one are just overtly political.

October 1, 2009 at 6:11 AMI'm pretty sure the bullying comment referred to the institutional authoritarianism present throughout the country, not the military parade. The CCP has killed more Chinese than even the reviled Japanese Imperial Army.
I'll celebrate China in my own way. As Bababardwan pointed out, it's also Confucius' birthday. That's much more appropriate.

Haha. Sheer force of will.

September 27, 2009 at 5:14 AM60 years of "liberation?" Well I guess being in China, you guys have to do the liberator-approved song and dance, so I'll play along and bite my tongue.

July 23, 2009 at 1:39 PMLove the Office Space reference in the lesson title. I haven't listened to the lesson yet; here's hoping "The Bobs" make an appearance.

June 18, 2009 at 3:43 AMMy wife is from Shenyang. I will be visiting there next year. She played me a video of a famous comedian from there, and I had no clue what he was saying :) Also, I had no idea the Northeast was China's rustbelt.
As for 白酒, I think it tastes like gasoline smells. Then again, I never developed a taste for alcohol.
