April 10, 2012 at 3:48 PMIt was recommended from another good read: "One Couple Two Cultures: 81 Western-Chinese Couples Talk About Love and Marriage" by Dan Waters. My wife does psychology research on Chinese-Western couple relationships. We collect books like these. :-)

April 8, 2012 at 3:42 PMYongle may have constructed the Forbidden City and sent sea expeditions to explore the world, BUT surely that can't compare to the fame from drunken suffocation by pillow or having a harem of 3000... :-)

April 8, 2012 at 3:07 PMMy comment above probably is mixing the issue of residency and the issue of citizenship, which are separate.
Anyway, on the issue of how many foreign migrants there are, my company was considering whether to cater to expat ageing health requirements in Shanghai so we recently did some brief research into the population here. Besides finding out that old expats with health needs don't stay in China, we also found that although in certain districts like Jinqiao and French Concessions there is a high concentration of foreigners, overall the numbers are still too small to warrant attention. They do however hold a lot of the money!

April 7, 2012 at 2:19 AMProblem with immigrating to China is that you have to give up your home country's citizenship, along with all the privileges and opportunities that goes with it. China does not recognise dual citizenship. My home country of Malaysia is the same.

April 7, 2012 at 1:41 AMOne word I've found very useful for face-saving situations is 调整 (tiáo zhěng) .
Eg. 我帮你调整一下你的文件 (wǒ bāng nǐ tiáo zhěng yī xià nǐ de wén jiàn)I'll help you do a bit of adjustments on your document.
Eg. 你的发言稿需要调整 (nǐ de fā yán gǎo xū yào tiáo zhěng) The draft of your speech needs some adjustments.
My staff in Shanghai says that a lot to me, which I have learnt is the face-saving way for them to say my language needs serious corrections! :-)

April 4, 2011 at 9:26 AMAre there companies and agencies that manages 月嫂's, or is it like 保姆 and 阿姨's where you hire the people direct? Wondering if the higher specialisation involves different management.

April 4, 2011 at 9:19 AMExtended family is essential I think. There's research on this thing called "Grandmother hypothesis" ("祖母假说") that tries explain why humans live so long pass reproductive-fertile periods when conventional evolutionary theory says we should not. To put it simplistically, it is because as a species we need our grandmothers around to help mothers take care of daughters.
Personally, I think grandmothers are essential because they get you ice cream when mummy will not! :-)

April 11, 2012 at 6:07 AM”经过一百年有多“(more than a hundred years ago)的意思。
