November 25, 2007 at 6:25 PMTaiPan, sorry to disappoint you, but in this special case there are just too many discrepancies to consider the two pronounciations as "close": 请 qǐng --> 3rd tone, ing-vowel 亲 qīn --> 1st tone, in-vowel 问 wèn --> 4th tone 吻 wěn --> 3rd tone

November 25, 2007 at 10:26 AMI agree with Mark on both accounts. 2 Errors in the Exercises: 1. Exercise 1: I could not get a score or get my answers marked 2. Exercise 3: 加 is 2 times in the selection, but therefore 光 is missing. Reduces max achievable score to 6/7. Besides, I still miss the possibility in Exercise 2 to switch Pinyin and Hanzi without having the answers erased. Checking the Pinyin to correct pronounciation always was part of my Excercise routine.

November 24, 2007 at 2:57 PMRon, write them. Over and over. Only that way you learn the details needed to distinguish them. Besides that is pure and stupid work to learn them. No secret. Actually I have not worked on my character skills for a long time. I can *read* 2k charactrs, but not write. And 2k is not enough, I more often then not stumble over unknown Hanzi. I should care more about characters again (esp. writing). So much to do.

November 24, 2007 at 11:22 AMSorry: "bumper stickers" (recently I got somewhat sloppy in my posts, please apologize...) BTW: I noticed that you had a real kid's voice in this lesson. Not of the Jizhou fake kid type.

December 3, 2007 at 5:21 PMAccording to my own, untested little theory, a sustainable relationship is primarily built on olfactory compatibility: You are bound to your partner if and only if you like how he/she smells. The possible reason behind that: complementary genes. No chance: Cologne does not help (well, unless you live in Cologne). So whatever the motives and rationales of our main characters are: Eventually sniffing will decide.
