As for diarrhea - as John pointed out, it is totally normal to get that when you travel to China your first couple times. That is not food posioning. When we went to Beijing for our marriage back in 1997 with my friends & family China, the complete group of us got it (7 people). Except for my little brother who was 11 at that time. But: There is a remedy: Chinese anti-diarrhea pills. They turn your low viscosity inside into some sort of cement - immediately. My parents bought them by the bucket - and still have some of those left for emergencies (e.g. traveling).

nicolas, it is not in the Chengyu-Dictionary: http://www.chinese-tools.com/chinese/chengyu/dictionary/search.html dict.chinesepod.com gives: 捉摸不透 zhuo1mo1bu4tou4 "not to breakthrough" the part-translations in dict.cn seem more helpful: 捉摸 --> 1. ascertain 2. fathom 不透 --> be impermeable to So I would roughly translate it with "unfathomable" and the second part of your sentence with: "Tawanese taste is something that indeed cannot be understood"

By the way: In Germany we eat sweet popcorn as well. I was totally shocked when I got my first salty popcorn. Uck.

Grr. This stupid guy messed up another chance for us to learn some more spicy vocab. If he followed Changye's senior advice above we might have gotten a totally different lesson.

There is also the "regular" scams which do not aim possibly at tourists. Especially buying fruits and vegetables on the street seems to be an art - you can get much better stuff than in the supermarket, but you have to be an expert at it. Many years ago, my mother-in-law and I were out shopping for groceries. On the steet side we got some really nice-looking 柿子 (persimmons) which were more than over-ripe (涩) and some mediocre 韭菜 with some grass mixed in. My father-in-law saw the results, went to the guy and asked him: "What did you sell all that garbage to my wife?" The reply was: "I am really sorry! But how could I possibly know that she was your wife?" Rice can be mixed with sand, meat gets injected water - you need to know the tricks of the trade to counter.
