February 12, 2008 at 6:55 AM不好意思。。。 请问 "城市的最低收入还是比农村的要多很多" 这句的"要"有什么功能? My rough translation: "But the minimum income in the cities is still much, much higher than the one of the farmers." But I cannot quite fit the 要 in there....

No chance to understand a word, as the fireworks were so increadibly loud in the background (distorted by the Skype compression algorithms they sounded like laser gun fire in classic arcade videogames).

I can imagine though, that they do not necessarily scare newcomers away but in fact might draw in one or two further in - those who are prone to be befallen by geeky tendencies...

Something like an "in-depths view", as you are opening up another dimension to the content. I always follow your discussions on character variations and history.

Whenever my 2-year-old son (who is in China right now with the rest of the family - sigh!) sees a 电熨斗 in a display or advertisement of an electric appliances shop he will point to it and say: "爸爸的!". The same effect happens with vacuum cleaners (吸尘器). Modern household, eh? John: I hate to admit it, but I like ironing shirts. It is so meditative. And guess what? You can perfectly use that time for listening to podcasts. 1 shirt equals a bit more than 1 podcast. So 4 podcasts to go today.
