We should even respect that there are still some people out there who are religious (SCNR).

Better tactic: If you are approaching your ultimum loading capacity carefully just slow down your eating speed and extend conversation instead, regardless of what is on the table.

February 29, 2008 at 9:21 AMchangye, yeah, but the impact of the line in English is much higher with the direct and unambiguous "sex" (where everybody expects some cheesy line like "you mean...like in...marry me") . 在一起 just does not tranports that kind of surprise.

February 29, 2008 at 8:06 AMRegarding "在一起": In the English version of the movie "Serenity" you find the following dialogue between Sam the doctor and Kaylee the Engineer during the attack of the Reavers (a type of zombies) cf. imdb: Dr. Simon Tam: In all that time on the ship... I've always regretted... not being with you. Kaylee Frye: With me? You mean to say... as in sex? Dr. Simon Tam: I mean to say. Kaylee Frye: To Hell with this. I'm gonna live! In the Mandarin version the climacticy presented lime "as in sex" is translated as "在一起". Very disappointing.

March 1, 2008 at 5:45 AMchangye, in German history curricula China does not even exist (or at least it didn't when I went to school). We only discussed it during two or three lessons (20th century only) - but that was because China was on TV those days a lot in 1989. In general you probably learn more about the Mayas than about China. Not on the radar screens. Most of what I know today I learned from a 12-part TV documentation on one of the German public TV channels. That was an excellent show.
