April 23, 2007 at 2:48 PMshibbish, the pleasures of the Advanced levels. My tip: If you are interested in this lesson, use it as a benchmark. Work with the lower levels, but come back to this one every once in a while, looking up words you think you heard (using an online dictiornary pinyin). You will notice the percentage you understand will rise over time - at first almost unnoticed.

April 22, 2007 at 8:24 AMQuestion on one of the Expansion sentences: 欢迎广大汽车爱好者前来参观 Where do I tack the 广大 to? Does it modify the 汽车爱好者 or the 欢迎? What would happen to the meaning if I would just skip it? I often have the problem with Chinese sentences that there seem to be surplus words...

April 22, 2007 at 7:31 AMGood lesson. You soon have a complete series for guiding us all from the airport all the way to CPod office (Maglev announcements is still missing). A special lesson could be devoted to Beijing bus stop announcements: If the ticket lady announces stops you need to learn how to distinguish 儿儿儿儿 from 儿儿儿儿. If it is prerecorded you have to recognize words under a layer of heavy distortion.

April 21, 2007 at 7:40 AMGreat lesson again, by the way. My wife forbid me to call her 老婆 when I learned that term years ago. She explained it is rather 农民-(nóngmín)-speak, not really flattering and elegant; roughly equivalent to the German noun "Weib". According to her the term of choice is 妻子 (qīzi).

April 25, 2007 at 7:11 AMThanks for another UI lesson! It left me with the following 4 language questions / remarks: 1.Question regarding the Expansion: 有人抢劫 The sentence is translated with a passive construction "I am being robbed", although the Chinese version is active. The 有人refers to the robber? How do I know it is *me* who is the victim? 2. Expansion: 到底谁才是事件的无辜受害者 What role does the 才 play? Is it emphasizing? Can I omit it? 3. In the dialogue I was a bit surprised by the following sentence part: 中国也该这样. I would have tried to violently attach a verb here, e.g. 中国也该这样作. So the 样作 can imply a course of action, too? 4. Not a question but a remark: The following idiomatic word order left me impressed: 话也不能这么说...
