Anyway, by little interest, I mean those Vera choose after discussion are interesting, but there's always a few that aren't so motivating. And I don't feel ready to using the pack of vocab and chengyu from advanced lessons.

November 14, 2007 at 1:13 PMsome more details : by early December, I will have completed 28 weeks of Practice Plan, initially 5 session a week, then only 4 longer ones. During those 28 weeks, I will have covered 95 different lessons (40% intermediate, 60% upper intermediate), the remaining 25 being lesson reviews (4 intermediate, 21 upper). So approximately 1/4 of the upper lessons is a review. I haven't worked out how much vocab this covers, but that's a lot, particularly as I add my own. I may ge around to sorting it out One interesting issue is I'll soon be bumping into the limit of published upper lessons (67 today, of which I covered 51, some of uh little interest)... C : 44 + 4 reviews – T : 48 D : 51 + 21 reviews – T : 72 C+D : 95 + 25 reviews – T : 120 (C 40%-D 60%)

November 13, 2007 at 12:33 PMand for $2000/year you get your daily shot of Practice Plan. Not sure it makes sense to compare with college education, all I can say is this would a) guarantee serious progress if you put in at least an hour/day, and b) wouldn't require that you leave your job.

November 13, 2007 at 12:05 PMjavcau, motivation is clearly very personal, depends on lots of things, there's no one-size-fits-all advice. I guess progress also requires making choices, which ultimately depend on your objectives and priorities. I just hope this community's enthusiasm is contagious enough... As wei1xiao4 said, the Practice Plan can be anything you make it. The money you put on it may or not be enough of an incentive to be serious about it, but based on other courses people register to, that's probably not enough. I suppose you could just spend 10-15 minutes to take a cursory look at the transcript, or listen to the recordings before the lesson, and still benefit. I don't learn that fast, and I certainly wouldn't feel confident enough, so I spend more time preparing, lots more. Regardless, I strongly believe that regularity is the key, I'm now 24 weeks into this programme, that's about 6 months elapsed time and I feel like a different person. I still have a very long way to go, and need constant repeats, but self-confidence has gone up considerably and a lot of things that seemed out-of-reach are becoming reality.

November 13, 2007 at 5:25 AMamber, sorry to be picky, but you may want to use character 嗯 instead of 唔 then. the 现代汉语词典 does refer 唔 (wú) to 嗯 (ng) but keeps the pronunciations separate, with the same meaning as 嗯 (ńg) interjection, indicating questioning. Other meanings of these non-pinyin ng sounds : 嗯 (ňg) interjection, indicating surprise or disapproval 嗯 (ǹg) interjection, indicatinga reply

November 14, 2007 at 4:12 PMWenlin has 小把戏 (xiǎobǎxì) as 'child', any possible confusion with (xiǎo bǎxì) 'little trick'? Doesn't seem an issue in the following expansion sentence because of the measure word, but just in case : 这种小把戏我看多了[...]
