March 19, 2008 at 10:13 AMJuriaan, at one point, I was transcribing the banter from intermediate / upper and advanced and made it public, but I don't any longer. Other Chinese podcasts do actually publish it for all their lessons, but that certainly is a lot of work, and annotation is yet more work. But mikeinewshot does this quite well (I just would hope he uses accented rather than numbered pinying ;-) But in the end, you get most value by doing it, working out all these words from the audio stream as you would in a normal conversation, which generally doesn't carry subtitles! You do miss out on a few, get mixed up with the tones sometimes, but unlike conversations you do have a repeat button...

March 18, 2008 at 11:48 AMacorrigan, I don't know what environment you live in, but I'd say that if you bring up Lorentz or Fourier's transforms in *any* discussion, you'd quickly find yourself pretty isolated, whether in a foreign language or in your own... As far as I'm concerned, conversational Chinese is about taking part in conversations 老百姓 have, not in specialist jargon - news reports are probably the most elaborate reference here. Everyone uses the word relativity in all kinds of ways that hardly have anything to do with physics theory (chaos is another one).

March 17, 2008 at 10:02 AM除了爱因斯坦爱那个相对论意外，还有别的方面，是对于年龄，亦即: 三岁的孩子 花了一月的时间，相当他百分之三的生命。三十水的人士话了一年以上才相当他百分之三的生命。对我来说，这是狭义主观的相对论，广义主观的相对论是你第次做某个作为比再次的，感觉不一样，变快、简单，比如听汉语对话!

March 17, 2008 at 5:51 AMJenny it's funny, it never occured to me that Berlin 柏林 and Dublin 都柏林 had a syllable in common, but it's quite striking in the Chinese transliterations. A bit of etymology (词源 cíyuán) : 'Dublin' supposedly derives from gaelic Dubh Linn (black pond 黑池 hēichí), this is obviously debated. A little more uncertain in the case of Berlin. Anyway, Berlin is a fascinating, vibrant city...

March 20, 2008 at 6:56 AM看着课文的照片，我想起来另一个欧洲跟亚洲的区别: 在欧洲葬礼的时候我们平时穿黑色的衣服，结婚才穿 白色的。黑色也许象征悲哀、严重的状况。
