March 2, 2010 at 10:10 AMThanks Connie and changye. As I suspected, you were right baba. I wonder if someone could give an example of a sentence which conveys the alternate meaning.

March 2, 2010 at 7:41 AMJust in case you were thinking it, I wasn't having a go at you. But I do realise that with my terse writing style its often difficult to tell the difference (and of course there have been times when I've had a go at people). Your opinions are always welcome.
Part of the reason I ask a lot of questions, without giving much help in return, is that I do not have enough confidence in the correctness of my answers. That doesn't mean you shouldn't have a go. But sometimes I just need a definitive answer from CPod, even if I suspect you are right.

March 2, 2010 at 7:35 AMActually, I didn't look back there.
I wonder if there is any record kept of these promises.

March 2, 2010 at 6:53 AMSo are you saying eupnea's interpretation applies in this example?

March 2, 2010 at 6:49 AMI suspect you are probably right. But I just want to make sure with an answer from a Chinese speaker.

March 2, 2010 at 6:15 AMConcerning a line in the dialog:
是啊,礼物你买好了吗? (Shì a, lĭwù nĭ măihăo le ma?) That's right. Have you bought your gifts?
The 3 online dictionaries I use define 买好 as "to ingratiate oneself", "to try to win somebody's favour".
Is there any sense of that here, or should it be taken absolutely literally?

March 1, 2010 at 12:19 PMCpod,
In the Podcast (at least the Radio Quality version), the second playing of the dialog seems to cut John off as he is about to explain something.

March 1, 2010 at 11:22 AMI bet you'd get a shock if one of them replied to you in Basque.

March 1, 2010 at 11:17 AMWhat has happened to Ken Carroll? It is interesting you should ask this in a lesson titled "Saying Goodbye at the Airport". Although, I'm not sure he had enough time to say his goodbyes.
