Cpod, in your 8th expansion sentence, your mouseover pinyin gives chēngzi for 橙子 instead of chéngzi.

Another question (related to the expansion sentences). It seems there are two characters, 呆 and 待, both pronounced dāi, and both can mean 'to stay'. Is there any difference in their meanings or usage?

From the expansion sentence:

我不喜欢喝饮料。我喜欢喝茶。 (Wŏ bù xĭhuan hē yĭnliào.  Wŏ xĭhuan hē chá.)  I don't like to drink beverages. I like to drink tea.

So tea is not a beverage?  What drinks does 饮料 include, and what does it not include?

In the Expansion sentence:

这本书很难读。 (Zhè bĕn shū hĕn nándú.)  This book is tough to read.

Does 难读 imply that the writing style is hard to follow, or that the writing is illegible? Or can it mean either?

Regarding one of your expansion sentences, what is the difference between 必须 (bìxū) and 得 (děi) ?

I've been trying to sort out your answer in my mind. Does the following make any sense:

他长什么样? His look is what type?

他长得怎么样? He looks how?

Does the 长 sort of act like a noun in the first example?
