June 1, 2007 at 8:06 PMWell, I've noticed that it's not just Infernal Affairs that American culture would rather remake rather than watch the original. The Korean movie, "The Host," has also been bought up and will be remade in the US. "The Office" from England was remade in the US. American Idol was an idea bought from England. And Thailand's Tony Jaa's movies, Ong Bak and Tom Yam Gung (known in the US as the protector), didn't have strong showings in the US, but I guarantee if Hollywood could hire him to do an American movie then it'd have strong showings. It's one of the cultural downfalls of the US.

Hong Kong travel agencies geared towards HK customers take them shopping a lot, and don't take them to so many historical places, and find Hong Kong food restaurants for you to eat rather than local stuff (5 days in Thailand and only 1 Thai meal!). I wonder, is this how Mainland travel agency tours work too?

May 30, 2007 at 2:29 PMAmber, I've used the trough style one's, but you can go even lower than that! At least it offer's a bit of privacy as opposed to when I was in India, in many situations there's nothing, and you do like the locals, go on the side of the street, or on the train tracks. Plus in China you can at least find a packet of tissues to bring with you to the trough...no tissues or toilet paper to be found in India!

May 30, 2007 at 3:32 AMI wonder how expensive the rent is in the apartments that they relocate to are. Are they usually more or less expensive than their previous apartments? One of the problems for poorer people in the US is that urban renewal bumps up the real estate value so that they can't afford rent anymore and need to move out...and if it keeps happening there's a shortage of cheap housing. My guess is that in China there isn't a shortage of cheap housing, am I right?

May 29, 2007 at 2:49 AMHey Lordstanley, I can't give you a definitive answer to your question about the tones of su4 zhi4...but if your Taiwan friend is saying su4 zhi2, then I'd place my bets on a Mainland-Taiwan difference. For example, I believe "week" (星期) in mainland is xing1 qi1 while in Taiwan it is xing1 qi2. Heck, trash in the Mainland is la1 ji1 and in Taiwan it's le4 se4.

And have any tips about how to type faster? Using pinyin to type is so slow! I remember on my PC when I used pinyin the computer would change the characters to the right ones based on context, and I rarely had to look at a list of characters to choose the right one.
