The students normally memorize a poem and are prepared by the teacher in pronunciation, expression etc. 念 and 读 are somehing you do in class -- when a teacher calls on you to read a paragraph or when there is a reading (enunciation) test in Mandarin on a certain chapter in a book.

August 12, 2012 at 1:20 PM五美元党 I heard people calling them "Yellow Banana" in Asia. Yellow outside but white inside. 红客sounds very interesting. Instead of "Star Wars" we now have "Internet Wars".
This Chinese Pod is more interesting and addictive than I expected. I have to take care of other things. Will be back tomorrow!
