4. 城管
a) 主要的任务就是驱赶街头无照商贩，以及检查各类许可证 - “印度媒体”
b) 一些处理轻微犯罪和无序状态的雇员 - “卫报”
c) 一种警察力量 - “每日电讯报”

August 18, 2012 at 11:23 PMMy daughter is exposed to both forms and is an American citizen and wants to be a Vet / work with animal. Frankly, I am more concerned about her English proficiency and would be very satisfied if she reaches Intermediate Level in Chinese. She has a good memory and has good Chinese penmanship; my mom was thrilled to receive a Chinese Christmas greeting card from her. She speaks Chinese with a cute American accent and is accurate in her pronunciation and can be understood.
I have relatives and Chinese classmates who are medical doctors in Taiwan so she will be fine if she ever visits.
If this whole issue of Simplified form is bothering you so much, it is perhaps better for you to contact the Taiwanese government involved in overseas Chinese affairs. My daughter's Chinese school is run and sponsored by Taiwanese organization and I understand they have summer programs for descendants of overseas Chinese. Let me know if you need any Chinese learning information from them.

August 18, 2012 at 6:13 PMI had to leave to have some photos developed from a waterproof & disposable camera. Seriously though, we were not allowed to do Simplified Chinese in Elementary but after that the teacher was not as strict. As for my American daughter, she is exposed to both but prefers the Simplified form. I understand the SAT is also in Simplified Chinese?

August 17, 2012 at 3:09 PMAlthough I do not hear “解放台湾”or “反攻大陆”being used much since earning money seems to be the common purpose these days, there is still some competition about who authentically represents China. I hear these comments:
Traditional or Chinese Writing. It is better to learn the Traditional Form because you can easily learn the Simplified Form but not vice versa.
Zhuyin or Pinyin. Zhuyin makes you pronounce the Chinese characters correctly. My take on this is this is true if no native speaker is on hand to teach you to read Pinyin correctly and you based it on English, Spanish or French etc. pronunciation.
Writing Style. Particularly in creative writing, the Taiwanese tend to be more sentimental and mellow. They love using beautiful and low frequency characters. The Mainlander is not as revolutionary as before, but still retains the energetic, class struggle thinking and writing style. I remember a Spanish journalist describing this as victim mentality. I find this humorous if not for the fact that this is supported by historical events, and not something invented by a shrink and a client to justify a deviant act in front of a judge and jury.
I am not a linguist like John but I believe that the Mainland Chinese is a more vibrant and viable language and Chinese Pod in the long run is going to have an influence in the Chinese language development.
