September 5, 2007 at 5:58 AMI believe it is a northern thing. I live in the north and no one uses that word, ever, but I've heard it used in the south and have been told it is still acceptable there. For some reason no one uses 先生 xiānsheng either where I live and addressing people is extremely confusing to me. I actually wouldn't mind an in-depth lesson on addressing service people and strangers in public (for example without saying 小姐 xiǎojiě I have no idea how to address those woman on the public buses who collect passengers' money and shout out the window).

July 21, 2007 at 9:20 AMI often hear 转一转 zhuàn yí zhuàn used to mean "doing some shopping" or "taking a walk" or essentially "wandering the streets". A popular Chinese pastime actually. It's often the answer when I run into a friend on the street and ask what they are doing, along with 逛街 guàngjiē.

July 19, 2007 at 7:04 AMSpeaking of chicken feet I recommend anyone passing through northwestern China to try 大盘鸡, "Big Plate of Chicken", a personal favorite. It originated in Xinjiang from the Uyghur ethnic minority if I'm not mistaken. It is the whole chicken, feet and head included, in a delicious mess of noodles and potato. I think it would be a hit with American college students.
