Was it Colin Farrell who went to Dave's high school? I also have a story about him. A girl I know apparently was in a bar with her friends, and Colin Farrell happened to be there. At one point he walked up to her and whispered "yummy" into her ear. Sounds like a creepy guy.

As far as dating Chinese girls - I've taught at the same school for almost two years and of the dozen or so male foreigners that have lived here, only one has been with a Chinese girl, a middle-aged man with a Chinese wife (who speaks terrible Chinese; why is that so often the case?). Ironically I broke up with a perfectly attractive (American) girlfriend because I wanted to go to China, and then didn't date anyone for a year and a half, only to start dating another American girl who is now teaching at my school in the middle of nowhere in China. Which is detrimental to my Chinese actually, but certainly worth it. I was interested in dating a Chinese girl but it's rather traditional here and completely different than a place like Shanghai; if you aren't looking to marry the girl and live in this town you shouldn't do it. One female friend (local Chinese girl) got very attached to me and confessed her love one night; all I had done was be nice to her and hang out with her sometimes. She had these hopes of me not returning to America and staying in this small town apparently, so I cleared that up. And within a couple of weeks of having my new girlfriend I have often been asked when we are getting married by every Chinese friend I have.

I live in the Chinese desert (well, that's kind of a stretch but I like saying that). Not in Xinjiang, but Gansu. But I do believe the desert in Xinjiang is the Taklamakan and the Gobi is in Mongolia and Inner Mongolia. Unfortunately though I haven't had many chances to trade water for guns here.

In the northwest of China it seems some people are vaguely aware of Halloween but no one celebrates it or knows much of anything about it. But me and some other American teachers will introduce some students to the fun of a Halloween (万圣节 wànshèngjié) party tonight; I'm a devil (魔鬼 móguǐ), my friend is a witch (女巫 nǚwū) and another friend is a vampire (吸血鬼 xīxiěguǐ). I like the word vampire in Chinese; "suck-blood-ghost".

在中国没有所有的酒吧很贵。(写得对不对?) Not every bar in China is expensive. I live in small-town Gansu province where a large bottle of Qingdao costs 8 yuan at the bar, but we usually drink local 西凉啤酒 at 4 yuan per big bottle. The bars are plentiful and not bad at all, although only a select few carry cold beer. There are also a couple of dance clubs where it is much more expensive, but at worst around 17 yuan for a bottle of Budweiser or Carlsberg. When I've visited Beijing or Shanghai and gone to a bar I've definitely felt that 我被抢钱了。

哦,明白了。没想到蟋蟀是吉祥物。在这儿好像我们没有蟋蟀,所以只有好运气。 Oh, I see. I didn't realize crickets were lucky. I don't think we have them here so I guess I just have good luck.
