Our local Chinese park has a small zoo, though I would more accurately describe it as an "animal prison." Something inside died when we visited it. Chinese zoos are another subject altogether. And of course it is equipped with everything else you need for a relaxing day outdoors--sharpshooting games, whack-a-mole, men playing loud drinking games, loudspeakers, a haunted house, bumper cars, and a small roller coaster.

First Peter, Bjorn and John (intro music for Dear Amber) and now Radiohead--你们对音乐真有眼光。

As far as lesson topics, I would enjoy more lessons about politics, history and general questions about society. For example, yesterday a man was talking to me about Darwin and Christianity and I couldn't quite get what he was saying. The most interesting conversations I have are always the most difficult to understand.

I've just begun giving Chinese lessons to another foreign teacher in my town, an old British woman. She loves to knit, even starting a "Knitting Club" with a couple of other teachers, so this lesson will be perfect to go over with her.

I used to think that "yak" was "hairy cow." It turned out to be a different character (牦牛 mao2niu2) but it helped me remember the word. 毛毛虫 may be one of the funnest words to say in Chinese.

What is the jazzy theme music for Movie Madness, anyway? I kind of like it.

When I came to China I was a little worried about my monthly salary of 3,000 RMB/month. But living in Gansu province is like living in a completely different country from Shanghai or Beijing and it's actually a high salary here. When I go back to America (or even to Shanghai next term to study) I'll miss eating out every day (for less than $1/meal) and traveling 3 months of the year. John's comment about plane reimbursement resonates with me this week; that $900 limit on the contract looked ok, until I decided to wait until summer to fly home... Since I'm not buying the ticket before I leave here the sly woman in the Foreign Affairs Office asked me to just give her a fake ticket to give to the president. Working in China is fun.

I went skiing in China with foreign friends to celebrate Christmas last year, outside of Hami 哈密, Xinjiang. It was quite the trip from where we live, and upon arrival we were greeted with the a single slope, smaller than any bunny hill I had ever seen. But it was fun all the same. Most of the Chinese skiers seemed to be women interested in the assistance of the buff ski instructors when they fell.

Is this "XYZ" and "flying low" Canadian English I wonder? And from the dictionary I'm aware that 衬衫 chènshān means "shirt," but why does it seem that no one uses this in conversation?

Jenny's comments about life in Sydney being so simple and innocent are funny because that's exactly what I would say about China. But I'll probably be in for a shock when I move to Shanghai next term to study.
