November 25, 2007 at 8:07 PMsebire and Rash, You're right, 是 does indees connect nouns (or, as in this case, noun phrases). In "最重要的是和家人在一起 Zuì zhòngyào de shì hé jiārén zài yīqǐ", the first noun phrase is 最重要的zuì zhòngyào de. 最zuì (most) 重要 zhòngyào (important) + the nominalizer 的. The way 的 acts to make 最重要 a noun phrase is by making it a modifier of an understood noun. In this case, the understood noun is "thing" or, more precisely, "thing to celebrate about thanksgiving". That in turn makes "和家人在一起hé jiārén zài yīqǐ (with family together)" a noun phrase as it is equated with 最重要的. So you have: 最重要的 (the most important [thing])是(is)[that][one]和家人在一起(and [one's] family are together)。
