July 23, 2010 at 2:20 AM现在外来语的日文翻译以音译为主，换句话说，日本人早就放弃对意译外来语的热情，或者更正确地说，当代日本人不愿意为了翻译而动脑筋，音译当然比意译简单得多！再加上，不少日本人以为多用音译外来词会让人显得聪明而潇洒。我们日本人天生（？）就不擅长学外语，但有些人却很喜欢乱用外来词，这简直就是一件令人苦笑的事情。日本人本来就珍惜舶来的东西，从古至今一直很积极地引进外国文化和技术。中国也有一句话叫“远来的和尚会念经”，对不对？呵呵

July 22, 2010 at 11:58 AM日文也有同样的问题，病入膏肓，好像问题比中文还要严重得多。当代日文里泛滥的不单是英文缩写词，而是从英文直接音译过来的外来词。请大家看一看，下面就是丰田汽车的一个“日文”官方网站。看起来就像不懂英文不能买车似的，我怀疑丰田到底是哪个国家的企业？

In the sentence “剟也，从刀干声”, the “从” indicates "semantic part", and the “声” indicates "phonetic part", so the character “刊” is not totally phonetic, but a typical 形声字. For the record, “取” is defined as “捕取也，从又从耳” in 《说文解字》, which means that the character is made of two semantic parts, namely 又 (hand) and 耳 (ear). In ancient China, ears of war captives were cut and used as evidence of battle achievement.
PS. The readings of “刊” (kan) in ancient times （both 上古音 and 中古音） were almost the same as modern one.
