Here are statistics, which I've just found on the Net, about words number/coverage ratio for some languages. Please be noted that I don't know how and when the reserach was done. It seems that in terms of vocab, French is the most learner-friendly, and Japanese is the least friendly among the eight languages.

July 26, 2010 at 4:15 AMYeah, 反切 is really a great invention! If it were not for 反切, Chinese phonologists would have had more difficulty reconstructing ancient readings of Chinese characters. There is no accepted theory about when 反切 was invented, but the first known record of the use of 反切 appeared at the end of 东汉 (later Han dynasty, 25 - 220), which was about one hundred years after the edition of 《说文解字》. FYI, the syllable table of the Korean language is traditionally called “反切”, which represents the fact that Korean scholars learned Chinese phonology very earnestly when they invented Korean alphabets in the 15th century.
