September 2, 2009 at 6:13 AMThe expansion sentences have no translations, is this normal? I find some of them difficult to decipher on my own.

The expression "山不转水转" is explained at length in the podcast. I think I got the meaning right, ie "if you can't shift the mountain, shift the water". What about the other two expressions that follow: 1) 水不转云转 2) 全都不转了 ? Or do all three make up only one expression, in which case I'm really missing something.

The 是 is the verb.
Zhenlijiang,
Indeed! I was not seeing the 是 that was there all the time before the 有 ! When this type of dyslexia happens it's time for me to take a break.
Adding my grain of salt to the above discussion, I also find lessons where something can be learned interesting. Learning both language and content at one go is a good way to spend one's learning time. The problem I see is integrating academic content into dialogues (direct speech). Indirect speech would be more appropriate. Or maybe a moderator interviewing an academic or an expert (eg the lesson "E-commerce guru"). In this way one could be spared the sometimes unconvincing student histrionics of SBTG.

August 14, 2009 at 9:18 AMI see. In that case the translation should have read "The former is a precious part ..."
While I'm at it, here's a question regarding a small grammatical quirk in the sequence 其实孙中山正是有国际视角的革命家. Why 有 here? 革命家 means "a revolutionary" (a person). So the logical verb would be 是 (to be). Although I see MDBG also gives "to be" for 有. There must be a subtlety in this usage.
Spontaneously I would write "孙中山有革命性" but "孙中山是革命家".
P.S. : unless (heaven forbid!) 有 is a typo for 又 [孙中山又(是)革命家 = Sun Yatsen is also a revolutionary ...]

August 13, 2009 at 2:50 PM4th line from the bottom: "它是中国人民宝贵的精神遗产" is rendered by "They are a precious part ..." Why is the plural expressed by 它 ? Why not 它们 ? Is it common to omit the plural mark whith the neutral form of the third person ? Were I to write the sentence I would simply content myself with "是中国人民宝贵的精神遗产", especially since the subject is clear from what precedes. Using 它们 is not strictly necessary, let alone using 它 on its own.

August 11, 2009 at 7:06 PMNote that many people assume that tourists staying in hotel don't have to register but in fact the hotel does it for them: that's the point of the red tape at ckeck-in. Here are my MDBG look-ups:

September 2, 2009 at 12:38 PMThanks Connie! I was particularly interested in these expansion sentences because of the not-so-familiar voice.
I'm wondering whether other poddies have the same problem as I have with certain phonemes. For example expansion sentence number 4: 股价只跌不涨,现在抛掉损失还小些. The word in bold is "sun3shi1" and I keep hearing something like "fen3shi1". It's as though the 3rd tone distorted the "s" to a "f". I also have a chronic problem when a female speaker pronounces a "p" like in 产品 (chan3pin3): I often registe r a "t" ("chan3tin3").
Wow, the message font is becoming smaller and smaller. I guess this is CP's way of telling us the discussing has gone on long enough.
