October 15, 2009 at 1:21 PMFive stars for this lesson. Don't we need more of such lessons presenting formulaic Chinese? These are all sentences we will be confronted with verbatim sooner or later in real life.

October 12, 2009 at 7:00 AMThanks Lujiaojie!
Incidentally the two following entries in my look-ups are wrong: 回应 hui2ying4/ 尊荣 zun1rong2. Instead it should be 婚姻 hun1yin1 matrimony + 尊容 zun1rong2. When I google the latter in Google images I get a pic of a Helena Rubinstein face cream. I surmise the word means "superficial", "skin-deep". The translation in MDBG is not helpful.

October 11, 2009 at 9:52 AMChangye, thanks for the clarification. I wonder why poddies gave this lesson rather low marks. I welcome an opportunity like this to learn some formulaic Chinese. Forms and questionnaires are something we have to deal with even before we get off the plane. Sentences with expressions of ratios, percentages and quantities in general are also welcome for I find the latter particularly hard to come to terms with in Chinese. Here are, no doubt containing some mistakes, a few MDBG look-ups for the less well-advanced like myself. I wonder what that word is at [01:07] 据说一些wubai??的公司. Is it the "top 500" among the companies?

October 11, 2009 at 2:06 AMLast line, 得分在60分以下者 is translated as "If you scored less than sixty points". Could someone tell me what 者 stands for here? Is it the subject of the sentence, ie the "person" who gets less than sixty points? Otherwise writing "得分在60分以下的话" would seem more logical.

September 27, 2009 at 2:30 PMI'm still no happy with 有缘无分 !
有缘 means "brought together by fate", right? But doesn't 无分 mean "not to go apart", "not to be separated". Therefore the expression should mean: "what fate brought together shall not be broken apart".
Could someone tell me how the meaning "... but not meant to be" is arrived at? I haven't found any meaning for 分 that are consistent with this meaning.

September 26, 2009 at 6:25 AMMikeinewshot said "A bit strange at the beginning when Jenny seems to explain 季度 twice."
Yeah, this is what gives CP's show away: they make it sound like everything is improvised and natural. In reality they rehearse, and rehearse again, and cut away the bad lines, and piece together the good bits.

September 25, 2009 at 6:54 PMI have a suggestion to make which I may as well make here: could CP please number the pages of the PDF transcripts?

September 7, 2009 at 12:58 PMThere's an interesting construction in the expansion sentences:
我的一个玩笑就冒犯了他
Translated as "one of my jokes offended her". I surmise this is the standard way of expressing a subset of something possessed by someone. So 您的二个玩笑就冒犯了他 would be "two of your jokes offended her"?

October 16, 2009 at 12:57 PMI didn't know a text version of the dialogue was available. While we're at it, why not also a text version of the expansion sentences? If they can't (mayn't) be made downloadable as audio files, at least they could be used for reading practice.
