June 15, 2013 at 9:40 AMBefore there was pinyin, Nanjing was often spelled as "Nanking". Does anyone know why? If the two separate spellings sounded similar, then I wouldn't wonder about it, but "n" and "k" don't sound similar at all. Does anyone know?
