In Australia I think you would hear LCD TV close to as much as you would hear Plasma TV.I don't know the exact market breakdown here ,but while I believe Plasma's are still market leaders ,I think there are nearly as many LCD TV's in the stores.Here the terms are not used interchangeably and everyone knows the difference.But I appreciate this may not be the case in all cultures;interesting.I'm wondering how long it's been since you've been back in the US [not that I'd know the story there] because these technologies change quickly [and here in Oz ,Plasma's came first ].

I didn't quite get the human plasma comment at the end of the podcast.Of course I know about plasma in blood ,but my Mandarin wasn't up to knowing whether that is what you were referring to or what you were saying.

This sounded more like a visit from a tradesman than a friend as he wasn't very warm.I'm wondering how it would go in a household where they are strict on removing shoes and they are visited by a tradesman who has to keep his safety boots on.I suppose they could roll out some red carpet in anticipation of such an occasion [leaving him scratching his head as to why he's getting such special treatment];a good way of saving/giving face?

In answer to the intro's question: 1/2 x 0 =0.Just as well I don't intend to work off that formula to work out how much Chinese I'll be learning on CPod.

My understanding is that 个 is the commonest measure word ,and so I think the above statement means that if you don't know what measure word to use,then 个 is your safest bet.

Great suggestion by Ken re practicing your Mandarin with the security guards.If they're going to ask a lot of questions,may as well turn it to your advantage.Can't speak for China,but generally people in that occupation have the time for it too.

It was good to have this sentence in the expansion :我找王老板。so as to have the characters for wo3 and zhao3 side by side for comparison as they look pretty similar.

I think you're right in that you drop the de for close family.But I didn't think it was limited to that.I thought the same could apply to a close friend.I think dropping the de indicates the degree of closeness in the relationship.Not sure if you've seen it but there was an episode of Qing Wen on this very topic ;the My Minefield here.
