I had never heard the term "Helicopter Mom" before [so don't think it's very common here in Oz...or am I outta touch fellow Aussies ? ] but found this explanation on the net:"They 'hover' constantly around little Timmy, ready to accede to his every whim".That explanation made a lot of sense. Is it commonly used in the US ?
I think you were spot on about McMurphy...."written some outrageous blog posts about Nurse Rachet" was very funny.

November 3, 2008 at 9:43 AMThanks Amber.Actually that reminds me.A Chinese friend once told me to say:
太贵了 ! 便宜 一点 which is simple and easy [but perhaps a little bit pleading and weak ],but I prefer to have your above line up my sleeve which is more demanding.I know yao4 usually means want or something similar. So I suppose "want price" would be the equivalent of "asking price" in English ? Thus I translated your suggested sentence as:
Too expensive,I don't like to hear the asking price ,you speak the real price.lol.."wǒ bù xiǎng tīng" ...don't want to hear it.I'd love to see you in action bartering.John also would be great to see in action on this front as I think he would be ruthless from what I heard on a DA.hehe.It would make a great video lesson ,but would be a very difficult one to pull off as I'm sure the vendors wouldn't want the cameras rolling ,or if they did it would introduce bias.It would have to be totally hidden video.

Thanks for the etymology of 马虎.I like hearing stories like that.I'd always thought of it as kind of "this way or that" way of saying so-so.

November 2, 2008 at 10:38 PMI agree with xiaohu.Pete's gems are much appreciated.I really enjoyed the story of the advertising pun,and the literal translations and other insights he adds to the show. Thanks Pete.
I was a typical foreigner then in that I was all set to go with mamahuhu. While it's great to get expressions like this it's equally important to hear what's actually used.

Perhaps Amber didn't feel comfortable inviting a guest on and then being obliged to perform a citizen's arrest on air.
Alternatively, perhaps potential guests had heard of Ambers previous heroic efforts, knew the above was on the cards, and shied away.

Yeah;I know what you mean mate.
A quote from that movie:
McMurphy: That's right, Mr. Martini. There is an Easter Bunny.
Do you think McMurphy would have helped the Internet addicts get back their grip on reality ?
