February 17, 2009 at 4:21 AMNice symmetry to the poem.Perhaps it is the deeper meanings more than anything else [such as the musical nature] that makes poetry so special. To 掘 one has to think and reflect.Somewhat akin to meditation. As long as one finds gold and not a rotting 臭 carcass.hehe.But I don't recall ever striking the latter.Good job Pete.

February 17, 2009 at 1:48 AMI love the drama in this lesson. What a crackup. While I'm looking forward to what ensues, including a possible courtroom scene [never seen/heard a Chinese one so should be very interesting],I hope in real life Chinese society isn't becoming as litigious as in the west.Am I right in presuming that it isn't currently? [In fact I suspect that some of the poor have their legal rights under represented..which is also a shame ]. Is China trending that way though?

February 16, 2009 at 2:19 PMThanks mate for that.Sorry John.I had every intention of reading the blog post but have been caught up sorting out my own computer crashes.I should have read the blog first though.I've read it now,and will be interested to see how this works.Sounds good.
John,
I see we were posting at the same time. Thanks for that.I've just followed your advice and got the popups working.Cool ! I've just zoomed in so I can get a better look at those more intricate traditional characters. It's kinda like a game of spot the difference. If I wanted to be spoon fed I would ask for the characters where there is a difference to be highlighted, but it's probably good for me to get a better gander at the characters anyway.Sorry again.I should have checked it out better first.Job well done mate.:)

February 16, 2009 at 1:51 PMGreat changes.I've got the traditional setting working. Now this is going to sound greedy, but I'd love to be able to see traditional and simplified at the same time, one below the other so I can directly compare without having to toggle. Is that a possibility? No biggie, and the main thing is we have traditional now.

February 16, 2009 at 3:14 AMThat's a great new feature then ,'cos I always try to not see the English until after I've tried to work it out but it's sometimes hard not to accidentally see.Well done.

I think 大哥 [da ge ...big brother...dude] was used in a somewhat mildly sarcastic way in the Intermediate lesson on Karaoke.Might be worth a listen.

February 15, 2009 at 12:51 PMAh,I plead ignorance.Pray tell more.I was just looking for a pic of police going by the name of jing cha to get Chinese police, and these looked like ones that would stick in my memory because of the cartoony nature and the fact that I thought it was making a bit of a pun of their name and the name of the dance, namely cha cha.But yeah, please tell me the significance.

In the audio discussion you said yi 一 was 2nd tone in yi xia.On it's own it's usually 1st tone ,right?,so is this one of those tone change rules? I love the admission to giggling in the 电梯 btw.A sign of a delightful personality.
While 等一下,will obviously do the trick,I'm wondering if this would be the most common thing to say when you want someone to hold the lift, and also wondering if there is a more specific request when you want someone to hold the lift.
It's comforting to learn 坐电题.With so many skyscrapers including Taipei 101 [?still {dubai caught up yet} the tallest building in the world] it's nice to know it's ok to sit down in these long lift rides. The Chinese are so hospitable.
Newbies,
The natural progression from this lesson is to the Ellie lesson "Don't push that button" which is here,so you can tell that 孩子 to 别按都 the buttons and to 千万别按 the emergency stop [?停] button.
