I agree with mikeinewshot, and others.I believe respect should be a two way thing.I know Chinese culture would dictate that there are times you should drink for example, but I think at the same time it should be respected when people don't want to drink.I hope some of these attitudes change. For example wasting food is also not good for the planet. Also overeating of course leads to all sorts of health problems. It leads back to a question I've had about how much other cultures are tolerated in China, and also freedom of individual choice. Why is it so important that one drinks alcohol for example?

On a lighter note though,I do like the example of:

"有的时候,我想请我的朋友去唱歌。但是她说我不想唱,不会唱。然后我就会说给我个面子吧,一起去" ...when someone just needs a bit of gentle encouragement to come out of their shell for a bit of fun.

Great QW.

urcto,

It means you've made a very good impression that we've all noticed :).No,you did not do a stupid thing. On the contrary your contributions have benefitted us all.Thankyou.

It is an analogy to someone jumping into a pool. You are analogous to the person jumping in.The community of Poddies and staff here are already having a fine time swimming around. When you jump in you make a splash which we all notice. But this is seen as a good thing.Water is after all the source of all life.Welcome and I hope you keep swimming around in this Poddie pool. :)

light,

I love it when someone can put a good spin on things like that.I'd love to hear how "to be stinky in the winter" was put in a good light.I'd also like to know if he was having a lend of you or whether he'd convinced himself.hehe

Pete,

Thanks.Sounds unheard of which paints the picture. Is citizenship a possibility at all? I imagine if it is that it's a lot harder than elsewhere.

kimiik,

What's that last photo of ,if you don't mind me asking mate?

first_tone and lukelearningmandarin,

Thanks for sharing your experiences guys.

hehe, kimilkopatra,I was at an organic food store and came across this bottle of Cleopatra's bath milk a while ago that was being sold in the same sort of container that regular milk is sold in here. There was a warning on the bottle that it was only for bath use,and I contemplated buying it as a treat for the wife, and asked if people were really still doing that these days. With a nod and a wink it was explained to me that it was to get around pasteurisation[another great Frenchman,I might add old Louis Pasteur] laws here and people were buying it to drink fresh natural milk.I wonder how common it is these days that people do follow Cleopatra's old beauty secret.

ps Yeah, casino specialist is another classic. He may attract the gambling addicts for the wrong reasons and you could imagine the consultation being at cross purposes, hehe.

matt,

Thanks for that.I wonder what happens if you're away and can't make it into the branch within 7 days.Sounds potentially difficult.

From your response to my second question I realise I was a little unclear with my question.I realised in this podcast that it was a Chinese lady who'd lost her card and thus had to show her 身份证.It's great to hear what Chinese nationals would have to do.I also realised that for 外国人 that it would be a matter of showing your passport.Sorry for going off on a bit of a tangent, but what I had been wondering is at what point,if any,外国人 are required as Chinese nationals are to have a 身份证.That is if they emmigrate to China or marry a Chinese person,is it then required? I was just curious while on the topic, that's all.
