amrita,

Aha;thought there'd have to be some specially designed implement if it's a relatively common practice. Thanks for the nice pic.In the absence of this specially designed tool,I wonder whether a lobster pick would have done the job?:

hmm,

Yeah,in Oz definitely my observation that we ate from a greater variety of animals as miantiao points out in my grandmothers day and were much more inclined to eat offal, such as kidneys, liver and tripe, and brains.Of course in recent times there has been some concern expressed over transmissible spongiform encephalopathies from eating sheeps brains, but I think the decline in eating it probably predated this more recent concern for reasons I'm unaware of.I'm not sure if the decline in eating offal stemmed from some of the associated health concerns or if it was just a trend that phased out and people just preferred meat.Perhaps it was just easier to prepare compared with say intestines. We then seemed to go through a period of a pretty uniform diet not unlike an English diet in those days which was pretty unvaried.Even to this day there are occasional Aussies who are strictly "meat and 3 vegies" people. But with the post war migration, thankfully the variety in cuisine has greatly improved [but not offal or variety of meats].

Interesting the contrast between the reaction to the idea of eating dog meat and cannibalism.I think of the Antartic Expedition in 1902 led by Robert Scott where they were killed and ate their dogs to survive and the subsequent Mawson expedition in 1911-13 where they too ate their huskies [which they depended on for transport of course] to survive [and ironically got vitamin A poisoning from eating the livers which ended Mertz's life] and can't blame them for their decision. On the other hand the Andes flight disaster in 1972 where the survivors resorted to cannabilism is harder to get one's head around. After all, even in the presence of an abundance of food ,sufferers of anorexia nervosa will in some cases literally starve themselves to death partially in relation to a distorted body image. Also hunger strikers in the past have shown they can starve themselves over their political convictions.Hope I never have to face any of these situations of course and I'm not judging anyone.

CPod 是最好 [is the best].欢迎来CPod 朋友[welcome to CPod mate]. :)

ps As you're new I thought I would try and gently point out that comments policy at bottom of page requests that when you post in Chinese you provide English translations for Newbie and Ellie lessons for the sake of Newbies and Ellies.Good job though and good luck mate.

如果我是彩民朋友在中国,我该选不吉的号码因为少的中得大的头将

I was trying to say:

If I was a lottery fan in China,I would choose unlucky numbers because less winners..bigger jackpot.

How should I have said that?

zhenlijiang,

Good question.I suspect they're pretty much the same thing. In English we have a few ways to refer to it.Yeah 家谱 [breakdown family and list ]seems to equate closer to family tree, and 族谱 [breakdown clan/ethnicity and list] seems to be perhaps closer to genealogy. In my mind if you were to draw a distinction,it would be this.If someone referred to their family tree it may conjure up an image of your average sized tree with just a few branches ,so perhaps just go back as far as your grandparents, whereas genealogy tends to make me think more of someone who is interested in an indepth research of their roots and tracing them as far back as possible. But this is just my impression and I too would be interested in whether the Chinese make any distinction in meaning between these 2 terms.

Yeah, actually for those with taphophobia and a safety coffin equipped with a breathing pipe, smoking could be good for their health,as long as they can keep the smoke signals going until 清明时节:

"Hey,I was just sleeping":

Those with the above "O" sign shouldn't worry too much about being buried alive, but for those with a tendency to the "Q" sign,it might be best these days to have a fully charged mobile phone on you at all times and order this coffin in your will.

Ah yes,the mormons are the best keepers of genealogical records which I think stems from a religious belief about saving their ancestors who were not baptised by baptising them posthumously on their behalf.I believe there is some huge vault under Salt Lake City where records are kept if I'm not mistaken. That's cool you can trace it back that far Pete.I have a lineage back to Brian Boru in the 10th century who drove the Vikings out of Ireland.Yeehah,be off with ye,hehe.

I'm very interested in 家谱,which can be an expensive hobby as when I got into it,one of the main ways of tracing it was buying birth marriage and death certificates which weren't cheap, before much of it went online.I'd be interested in how the Chinese trace their ancestry. Is it usually handed to them or do they have to trace it usually?

Interestingly I've noticed how martial arts schools are very aware of their lineage and will usually proudly display a flowchart of it.

Fancy offering their ancestors cigarettes.Don't they know it's bad for their health?

Jenny,

I'd like to second the motion that we hear those old tapes.Don't worry about sound quality.I'm sure it'd be 很可爱.It's like mentioning you've got a secret and then not divulging. As one of the CPod jingles goes "come on, cough it up" ,hehe :)
