Good point and nice construction mate.A little while ago there was a post on this site of a famous poem that takes your concept to an extreme,where the whole poem is constructed of shi in the different tones.In English it's called "The Lion-Eating Poet in the Stone Den". Here's a link to it if you're interested.But I would warn that it's not to be viewed by the faint hearted.It is a brain twister/tongue twister and could be offputting to newbies.In my limited experience Chinese is not nearly so hard as this poem,because as you say context is king.But it does remind me of a thought I had recently along these lines.Yeah,I'm sure I'm often recognising which of the different kuai's [just to take your example] because of the context and construction,and collocation it finds itself in.I recently thought about what if there was a sentence that had homonyms that weren't the ones you would predict from context.I'd like to get around some time to try and see if I can either find or construct examples.But for now I want to catch up on some lessons.

August 5, 2009 at 2:00 PMI can't help it.I've just gotta briefly say I love the dialogue in this lesson.Classic stuff and very entertaining.My favourite line:
医生，我有糖尿病的症状，而且心率不齐、牙龈出血、老是觉得疲劳。你帮我验验血，检查一下有没有糖尿病或者其它什么病。我还要做心电图、脑电图。还有，癌症要怎么查？
Of course the punchline never disappoints either.I take my hat off [hey the hat of my avatar is getting cut off..quite apt] to whoever is scripting these dialogues.
I am curious how free a Chinese doctor would feel to diagnose hypochondriasis and state it so bluntly.

Several sources suggest the Chinese word for Coeliac disease is:
腹腔疾病
..which breakdown would have it simply as "abdominal cavity sickness" which sounds entirely non specific and unsatisfactory but there you have it mate.I hope you get a more authoritative answer though.I suspect they would often just use the word "coeliac" itself a lot of the time,borrowing it from English.

I'm no expert,but for what it's worth I'd say yes,it's meant to occur twice.Chinese often reduplicate verbs.
eg.kan3kan3 yi1xia4
And in my opinion what better verb to reduplicate than yao2...to shake/rock.After all,one doesn't tend to shake ones head once.But perhaps it is ironic that I'm answering when the expansion sentence advises,
如果你不知道，就摇摇头。
..if you don't know,just shake your head.

August 3, 2009 at 2:43 PMOk,some feedback on the new exercises.Overall I really like the change.The only two things I don't like as much as the previous format are:
1.I preferred having the various exercises set out on the 3 pages rather than the one.This way if one is pressed for time and only has time to whip through one of the exercises,then one can do so.But this is a very minor point.The flip side of this is it seemed more stable and no time waiting for the next page to load.
2.Because it is on the one page,the characters seem smaller and a little harder to read.Once again,not a biggie,and I can work with it..just have to sit a little closer.On the other hand,at least it was all set out to see without having to use scroll bars which were less satisfactory.
But the positives outweight these:
1.There seems to be more vocab tested in the matching exercise including stuff from the supplementary vocab,and erqie,this is set out in a better more stable way than previously...no sharply angled diagonal lines that get lost.
2.The wrong answers in the matching exercise are easier to see [I got 胆小 and 胆小鬼..matched up to the wrong cowardly/wimpy..and coward...which leads me to a question...I take it the former is the adjective and the latter the noun?..I'll have to watch those more carefully].I also take it green lines indicate what the right answer should have been and red the were the wrong.
3.I liked the new reordering exercise.Fun.
4.I also preferred the new dictation exercise for 2 reasons.Firstly it made one practice for the whole sentence.Secondly it accepted hanzi input [I don't think the old exercises accepted that did they?].
5.Finally I think it's a good idea that reloading the page will randomise the exercises,though in truth I think I'm personally unlikely to use this as there's too many other lessons to catch up on and will probably just move on.
