Looks like I missed snagging something amusing that [even better] could have been "rare and bizarre memorabilia".
..any chance of getting a copy of it?

Ok,to expand on the #1 question.Doesn't it depend both on what is being referred to and isn't there a lot of individual variation? I mean if we were referrring to the Olympics for example, weren't all the Chinese hoping their country would be #1 [as we all were]? Are they saying they don't want to succeed in business? Are they happy to let everyone else board the train in front of them? Thus,I dunno.I find it easier to comment when something more specific is being referred to.Perhaps I have missed your drift.

September 28, 2009 at 11:25 PMhehe, the avatar for this lesson is the same as for the previous lesson 235 only taken from a different angle.I know you guys pay some other company for your photos,so I hope they didn't charge you twice [or at least gave a disount].Having said that,it looks like 轻微 is the most common way to say trivial, but I prefer 小聪明 【clever in trivial matters,or sharp but petty minded, hehe] for a couple of reasons.Firstly I already know 聪明 and secondly I love the way you can just add 小 to completely modify the meaning, which I have seen used similarly in other words like 胆小鬼.

I dunno about the #1 thing.I'm not a big fan of generalisations, however it's interesting in your comment about it that you refer to Australians which thus refers to individuals [and not Australia collectively..the country] and then China [not Chinese which would have been what followed on from Australians] which is in keeping with what they say that Chinese are all about the common good whereas in the west we are more about the individual.

Confucius' birthday mate.From the web:
"In mainland China (People's Republic of China) Confucius is honored on the anniversary of his death - October 1st. In Taiwan, he his honored on the anniversary of his birth - September 28th. His birthday is a legal holiday in Taiwan. It is referred to as Teacher's Day since Confucius is considered the greatest teacher in Chinese history."
I can't tell you any more than that.
....can any Taiwan Poddies confirm this is being celebrated in Taiwan?
btw,no,I didn't know the Chinese term 中庸,and nor have I read that book ,which is discussed briefly here, and can't say I specifically recall it's mention when I read the analects a long time ago,but having read the tao te ching, the concept is familiar.I bet that was an interesting discussion you had.I'd love to have been in on it,particularly if they were passionate/enthusiastic enough to give you a crash course.Enjoy :)

September 28, 2009 at 8:55 AMThanks Henning.I wonder if there are ever any injuries from eating drunken shrimp.Perhaps I should see if the female praying mantis could show me how it's done.If it has trouble applying it's usual techniques to the shrimp it could spawn a new martial arts style..after all we already have drunken monkey,so why not?
Why not have them even fresher after letting them clean your teeth:

ya2yi1xia1 ..dentist shrimp

Nah,it doesn't mean either of those. It just refers to when someone is trying to have you on..trying to fool you and you're calling their bluff...telling 'em to knock it off.
