Oh right,so 红红 is someone's name in this dialogue.I know CPod often like to reinforce recently introduced vocab by bringing them up in subsequent lessons and I was trying to cast my mind back to the recent QW on 红 as I listened and was drawing a blank.I should have realised with the reduplication [seems common in Chinese names,no?] and the context, but the recent 红 lesson threw me,hehe.

Red is a common nickname for a red haired person in the west, but obviously it's Chinese significance are why it would be chosen in China.

Ah,the penny drops.I was watching ufc the other night and I was wondering why this guy had 月 and 生 tattoed on his back...I was thinking ..hmm ...month ..birth..what's he trying to say?Now I see I should have read it as one character 胜..victorious [he wasn't btw].

I love this expression:

蜻蜓点水...sounds so classically Chinese

http://img.sina.com.hk/news//14/2007/0615/1181874786_LzNZnt.jpg

..dragonfly [touching a ] point/speck/dot [on the] water

..a very vivid description as they do touch the water very lightly

I'm interested in this expression:

听哥一席话,胜读十年书

..meaning to learn a lot from what someone says.So if we were to look at the literal translation,I suppose it would be:

listening to your older brother's [obviously representing someone more experienced] entire banquet words [what's discussed in a conversation] beats reading books for 10 years

...in other words you can learn more from listening to what someone says than you can from reading books for 10 years.

hehe, this clip [sorry,it's youtube] seems relevant to your comment...the gentle rejection didn't discourage him enough so something a bit more blunt had to be employed:

bodawei,

..actually I'm just giving my recollections as a kid [and of course I'm not sure how accurate that is and how much was just heresay..that is it's what I remember being told and I remember a mate did come back from Sydney with fireworks but whether they were actually illegal down there at the time and gotten from some dodgy source I dunno...but it doesn't seem likely].And of course from a kids point of view ,the view of someone who thought fireworks were cool and exciting it felt the other way around..that we were backward up here and Sydney had the cool stuff.Of course now in retrospect I can more fully appreciate the rationale behind banning them.
