March 8, 2010 at 9:24 PMThanks John.Googling rying to find why 三八 means what it means I found lots asking the same question and lots answering that they weren't sure but that they thought it may be due to International Womens Day.However finally I found something which may be the answer:
"3180: it refers to 王八蛋, which is a curse word. Cause "3" is "三". Then after putting one stroke "1" on "三", it becomes "王". "8" is "八". And "0" looks like an egg, "蛋". "
...and that 三八 may be a truncated form of that.
I don't know if this is right or not,but it's the only explanation I've found.

March 8, 2010 at 5:01 AMInteresting Jenny that in your comment you have zheng as 1st tone which I was about to comment on as my online dictionaries have it as first tone also,but the podcast and the vocab tab has it as neutral tone.I suppose this is another case of where either is fine.Is there regional variation,or is one more oral and one more formal or bookish or something?
I was going to ask whether there were any famous kite festivals.Shandong hey,first Confucius now another famously Chinese thing..kites.
