April 12, 2010 at 11:03 PMMate, your first answer clearly shows you weren't questioning enough [it only looks like a weak halfhearted question] so I think that it was definitely wrong ....and as for your second answer...do I really need to elaborate? !!! wrong wrong wrong

April 12, 2010 at 11:30 AMNo biggie, but thanks John. It doesn't faze me...it only means one has to stop and check closely to find if the error is more than the obvious punctuation difference.

April 12, 2010 at 11:13 AMFurther potential reasons from wikipedia:
During the persecutions of Antiochus IV Epiphanes, the Greeks forced the Jews to slaughter pigs in the Jerusalem temple, which did not improve the image of pork. Moreover, the Roman legion X Fretensis, that undertook to destruction of the Jerusalem Temple in 68, had a boar for an emblem, sealing its fate as a symbol of everything contrary to Judaism.

April 12, 2010 at 10:43 AMYeah, but that seems quite a stretch, beyond the feeling that pigs were filthy animals and may be unsanitary to have around.

glad you liked the photo.I meant to post one of 小笼包 as well, but didn't get around to it as I thought maybe I'd try and find a better one.But this one was the best dissection I could find to demonstrate the soup being on the inside [I never realised that that's why they're called soup dumplings before...I presumed they were cooked in soup or something...also thanks for the tang warning guys]..it's the top right section of the photo:

April 12, 2010 at 7:38 AMThanks for your answer John, but I now feel I need further clarification as "sorry,I have to go now" would to me tend to give the other meaning of "first" I put in my original question....sorry,but this is first in my priority as it's an important matter I have to attend to [not I'm the first person to leave here, though I can see that this is not necessarily the case and what you are saying may still be consonant with Connies reply]
I think to make it entirely clear, lets say we have a party of four and someone has already left, and half an hour later another member of the party has to leave.Would they be announcing that they are the second person to leave,or would they also be using this 先?
Sorry for being a bit slow on this one.

April 12, 2010 at 7:24 AMactually you are right mate ,we all say stuff that's obvious. I'm not sure if I've ever heard anyone announce that they are the "first" [like there's a prize for it or something, hehe] to leave before [have you?...perhaps people do,but just not in my circles]....more something along the lines of announcing "I'm off" if they are going to announce something obvious,so that's why I was trying to clarify whether it was a usual custom in China or not....I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it [could be fun if that's the custom]....just curious.
