I can follow what you are saying with western writing and 左撇子人. Can't quite picture where the smudging would occur with the traditional hanzi writing. I guess at the bottom of the page when one then transferred to the top of the page one would have to be careful not to smudge the last character .But I would have thought for the rest that by the time you started a new line the ink would be dry. I guess I see your point but I suppose it comes down to ink drying times [currently usually only the last character but I guess in the olden times it may have been a lot slower]. If they were a little slow to dry and you had a fast writer then it may have been a problem.Perhaps a bit of smudging could then be a point of pride,hehe.
ps There was never going to be ink smudging in the movie Hero with the long calligraphy brushes used:

...but a bit of blood smudging or arrow holes was a possibility
