hehe, well spotted mate, except of course it was Ted Striker and Dr Rumack [ Leslie Nielson]. I guess you remembered that also though. I guess with my penchant for 胡说 though,of which this is a perfect example, it may be viewed by some that like Otto Pilot, I'm full of hot air

ok, so here's another one of those examples I was talking about of words that are very surprising to find in the vocab tab. In this case 受 to receive I would have put as an ellie word at most. From our recent discussion in this lesson [hey the links are gone !]:

..my guess is that CPod have it in there for the role it plays in 受重视 to receive+value [as shown in the next vocab word 重视】=to be regarded with respect. The thing is though,is that the vocab tab is also being used to save vocab to our vocab manager. I think it would be safe to say that those at UI already know this word 受 and it is of little value having it in there by itself but having both 受重视 and 重视 is of value. I think that would be a better way of presenting it in the vocab tab and more useful.

just to add a little on the word organic.I guess we had this original meaning of "having the characteristics of organs"...and then you have to decide what are those characteristics. What are the things that define living organisms? Is it movement?...no..robots move and trees don't.Is it growth? Is it reproduction? Many attempts to define usually are problematic and have exceptions. It was discovered that the thing that living organisms had in common was that they all contained certain carbon based compounds and this became the easiest and clearest way base a definition of organic on.

Excellent point and something I was wondering about. What are the standards? who certifies the produce as organic? What scrutiny is there? What's to stop people claiming the produce is organic and bump up the price without having employed any organic practices? In short, how reliable is it that you are buying true organic?

the way I see it, there are fundamental/basic/original meanings to words and then they are applied in new situations/adapted to take on new/extra meanings. I guess I think of organic in the same way as orangina in it's most fundamental meaning, but you are right, in that nowadays it is probably more commonly applied in the sense you refer to [the sense it is used in this lesson] outside of a scientific type discussion. I don't however think that discussing the original meaning of the word makes it confusing. I think it's helpful to know what the word basically means and then see how and why it's been applied. Of course it's word origin is a combination of "organ"+"ic"...having the characteristics of organs...which basically refers to having the characteristics found in living tissues.

Until a better answer comes along I'll give you my take on it. I think it's just a case of when context makes it clear who is being referred to it can be omitted.

love this word 口感...feeling what sensations you get from the food in your mouth. Yeah, enjoying food is about more than the flavour;it's a whole sensory experience. I think texture is such an important part.

other contendors for word of the lesson were 农药 and 据说 [I've seen this one on the boards quite a bit]...it reminds me of something Confucius or someone wise would say making a proclamation. Does it turn up in the analects btw? I know in English it is common in the analects to see something like "the master said".
