I think it's being used in one of it's other nuances of meaning "proof"...the receipt is used as proof of payment

..but you could work "based on" in there....based on the proof of the receipt you'll receive your photos. I think this latter is closer to the mark than my first guess

It can also mean "rely on"

3 days later if you bring your receipt we'll rely on that [we'll depend on that...[as proof of purchase] ] and you'll receive you're photos

Sorry,just guesses mate.

I think there is a distinction to be drawn between the common bikini bottom and a thong. A thong is much closer to a g string,so there's very little material at the back.

thongs have been Australias iconic footwear for many years now [since the Melbourne Olympics in 1956 I believe when the swimmers wore them]. This iconic status was demonstrated at the Sydney olympics in 2000 when there was a huge thong carried around in the closing ceremony:

So when we refer to thongs, yeah it is more likely we're referring to the footwear. However, we Australians are well aware of the bottom undergarment called a thong and you hear that being referred to here also and it would thus depend on context as to which one is being used. I agree with brendaninaus. Sandals have a strap that holds the ankle in place [ I tend to think of something like in the lesson picture except without the high heel]. As thongs lack an ankle strap they tend to make a flip/flopping sound/action as you walk in them. Slippers refers to footwear you can slip into and I always think of them as winter bedtime footwear to be worn around the house at night to keep your feet warm and are thus usually made of some soft[sometimes fluffy] material [that folk wouldn't wear outside the house generally]. I'm surprised to see there is no distinction made between slippers and flip flops though some style of slippers would have the same action/sound.

I realised that but was too 害羞 to comment further on that tack [我不要改变一个塑料玩具。。。我真是个“我私“。。可以猜这个我新杜撰的词?】,hehe. I was just saying that that's not the scene the quote's from.

I agree, this was an absolute pearler of a lesson. We have face, modesty, and then the really good lines kick in with:

你想读什么专业,爸妈都支持你

followed by the dad cracking into gear with a great 什么? at the mention of 哲学 . The momentum of the dialogue from there on moved constantly away from the stated line above of 支持 to it's climatic tragic conclusion. Unfortunately I guess this is a common scenario and not just in China.

the contrast between the hardline stance of the father and a slightly softer approach by the mother.

This was a cracker of a line:

我看那些搞哲学的人,没一个是正常的,不是疯子,就是傻子。

..lol. It also has that great construction that we met in another lesson not so long ago...bushi a , jiushi b. It's nice to have this reinforcement because this time it didn't seem strange or hard to interpret at all.

I would have liked to see the son show a bit of early aptitude for philosophy by coming out with some philosophical retorts. For example if he had responded to:

兴趣能当饭吃啊?

..with a great philosophy quote that expressed the notion of some thing along the lines of ..no but it will give me food for thought. I guess a Chinese chengyu could also do the job. As I say an absolute cracker of a lesson but a chengyu wouldn't have gone astray. Can anyone think of a fitting philosophy quote or chengyu the son could have used to rebuff that comment ?
