September 8, 2010 at 1:41 PMI don't know mate, but 实收 makes perfect logical sense to me if you look at the breakdown. It represents what the cashier 实 really [or actually] 收 [received]. Thanks for giving us those terms. :)
小计。..similarly sounds pretty logical. As you've said it's the small count. I guess as you point out it's the number of items x the cost per item. So if you'd bought 3 Viennettas then the xiaoji would be 3.50 x 3=10.50

September 6, 2010 at 11:12 AMThis 煲 character is interesting. ok, it has 火 as the radical and 保 obviously is the phonetic. But the construction is great. The 火 being underneath...the rest is likely a coincidence as 保 is merely acting as a phonetic I guess, but one could imagine the fire burning the wood to heat the pot shaped device above it [ok, I know it's 口。。mouth..maybe it's the mouth waiting to be fed] and the 人 on the side attending to the cooking.

September 5, 2010 at 3:04 AMI love that you've created a whole new page dedicated to the 5th year anniversary. I've gone through it all..very good...and am now keen to see more. I guess I'll just have to be patient.

September 4, 2010 at 5:02 AMhehe, yeah, I'm a big believer in playing the laowai card..hen hao zhuyi. The problem as I see it would be when you make a faus pas that makes sense..is not obviously a mistake, and if your Chinese isn't too bad, is taken as your real intention. Worse still, not realising that you've been taken the wrong way. Ah, but it's all part of the fun, hey? Jiayou mate. :)

September 4, 2010 at 4:46 AM"as in you are insincere"
..really? Oh man...I struggle with that. Do they not consider the possibility that you are sincere? Do they not also consider and respect cultural differences?

September 4, 2010 at 4:41 AMthanks Chris...that's good to know. The faux pas via wrong tone etc is an interesting one. There is the obvious learner who will I'm sure, be given the benefit of the doubt. There will be some who achieve fluency and thus unlikely to make such a faux pas. But if one were to start to transition between the two...how will the call on a faux pas be made? ...hopefully still with the benefit of the doubt, hehe.

September 8, 2010 at 1:49 PMHow do you type the symbol for yuan? Is it used routinely? Ok, what I mean is...the Chinese character for yuan is 元。 Is that also used as the symbol in front of the monetary amount in the same way that $ is for dollar? My feeling is that it is, but thought I should double check.
