September 17, 2010 at 11:06 PMJohn talked about being in an airconditioned office at the start of the podcast and then at the end said that Shanghai summers were more nanshou than Florida due to a lack of central airconditioning in Shanghai. I guess this lack of central airconditioning refers to peoples homes and not offices? Can anyone elaborate? I would have thought shopping complexes would also be air conditioned?

September 18, 2010 at 1:07 AMyou've given me an idea for a self coined Chinese word. My dictionary [mdbg] doesn't have anything for brunch. So I came up with:
zhóngfàn ..a contraction of 早+虹+饭 【早虹饭】 。。not to be confused with zhōngfàn 中饭
I have subsequently found that they probably use 早午饭 or 早午餐, but while these could be seen to contain the 早 element of 早饭 or 早餐. literally it could also just mean "early lunch" rather than have the culinary implications that brunch may contain..that it's between breakfast and lunch and often is more of a late breakfast [food wise] than it is an early lunch. I also like that it's nearly a homophone of 中..which can mean between [so again adding to the feeling that its between the two] but distinguished by tone, and that it doesn't have the 午 which seems to be more time specific [11am-1pm] and thus shifts it closer to a lunch than a 10.30 am brunch. Like brunch, the zhong is a contraction...the z from zao and the hong from zhong of zhongfan fame. 虹 means rainbow and symbolises the bridge between breakfast and lunch and that it is covering both meals.
